"My Outlook On Photography And Collecting" - Çetin Nuhoğlu
  • 1) The Culture Of Collecting
  • The Collector deals with the values of the past, collects, organizes, evaluates, publishes or get them published, which are their functions. In other words, it's a passion for collecting, accumulating, and conserving. Collecting is a way of life, which makes one enriched and happy.
  • The collector is hand in glove with art, but is not an artist, with history and art history but not a historian either. Is anyone who collects items considered as a collector? Is it enough to have high income without adding culture on it? Dozens of such questions may arise right away around the subject as it is such a complicated matter.
  • However, there is an artistic attitude in it, and art is a part of life, the biggest joy and responsibility.
  • 2) Art Collecting
  • I'm an art collector. I've been interested in the works of master Turkish painters and sculptors for such a long time. Also I have a quite interesting and rich collection of plastic arts decorating the walls of my office and my house.
  • My collection is not only in my center of attention, but also enriches the life philosophy, the quality, and the artistic culture of my employees.
  • 3) Photography and "Istanbul Photography Museum"
  • It's a well known fact that photography has affected and even changed and directed the entire world's visuality since it was technically invented 170 years ago. The communication era that we live in has begun with the revolution of photography.
  • Photography has such an interesting, long and vigorous story in our country, both as an art and profession. First of all, photography is the visualization of the lived history; it is a witness. The influence of this profession and art is seen in all our lives this way or that from passport photos to memory photos and daily media.
  • 'Istanbul Photography Museum' has been established with the contributions of 'Fatih Municipality' and 'Friends of Photography Association' which was established by master photographers from all segments of fine-art photography aiming to open a photography museum. The municipality provided the building, and the association handles and organizes the museum.
  • The museum is in Kadırga, which has a special place in Istanbul's historical cityscape, a rich neighborhood with Mimar (Architect) Sinan's monumental mosques and civil architecture examples around its medieval square.
  • When I visited the renovated Museum building, which used to be a cultural center with 1.000 m2 space, I have seen how an important new step is being taken for the art of photography. I'm sure every visitor will be sharing the same feeling.
  • The art of photography has also other parameters such as knowledge of history, general culture, & continuity beyond my personal curiosity. I reckon that the museum is a delayed necessity in order to share these values with my country's artists and people.
  • 4) Looking At Life & The Country With Responsibility
  • I don't want to compose intense sentences about life. I'm a businessman who knows and accepts that one has responsibilities not only for himself but also for his country throughout life, which is full of mysteries and secrets from beginning to the end and who is in an endeavor in a small way.
  • This is how I approach art collection. It's been really pleasant & meaningful for me to contribute to Istanbul Photography Museum with my collection, moreover within the frame of Classics of the art.
  • The Collection' in 'The Classics Gallery' of 'Istanbul Photography Museum' will be the center of knowledge and memory transfer to the next generation of artists and all who are interested in this art. This environment will create a special memory. It will be such an important and pleasurable ritual for each person who visits the museum from here today to the past.
  • With my wishes for Istanbul Photography Museum to be beneficial particularly to photography artists, art lovers and all people in Istanbul.
